My brother is innocent

Nov 7 2003

By Lisa Mccarthy, Evening Mail

The family of a city man held by anti-terrorist officers in Pakistan have pleaded for his release.

Tariq Mahmood, a father of two from Sparkhill, was arrested by security services in Islamabad on October 4 and has been missing since.

His brothers Ali and Tahir (pictured) spoke of their devastation and shock at their older brother's arrest - and insisted he was not a terrorist.

"It is a living nightmare," said 24-year-old Ali.

"My brother is not a terrorist. He has never done anything wrong in his life."

Tahir, aged 27, added: "He is a loving family man, devoted to his children, his wife and us - we are a close-knit family born and bred in Birmingham.

"We are in complete shock - we just want him home."

The brothers said Tariq, a former taxi driver, flew out to Pakistan two years ago with his 24-year-old wife Raffat and their two children Maryam, aged three, and Sammayah, 18 months, to settle a land dispute at their family home.

"There is nothing suspicious," said Tahir. "We have all been out there trying to settle it and have challenged several court cases."

A minister from Pakistan admitted at the weekend that Tariq was being held in the country, but the Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan has denied holding him.

Tariq's mother Fayyaz, and two other brothers Shaukat and Faisam, flew out to Pakistan days after his arrest to try to track him down.

The family have hired Birmingham law firm Tyndallwoods to fight their case, written to Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and have hired a solicitor in Rawalpindi.

The Foreign Office said: "We haven't received formal notification from the Pakistan foreign affairs to say he is being held. Until then we cannot do anything official."

* Moazzam Begg, from Sparkhill, was arrested in Pakistan in February 2002 on suspicion of being an Al Qaida terrorist. He is awaiting trial by the US military in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
