Toilet terror for councillor

Feb 14 2001

By David Bell, Evening Mail

A  72-year-old councillor was forced to cower in a toilet for his own protection after he was allegedly manhandled by his own party members.

Ray Holtom

The veteran politician claims he was left bruised and housebound for three days after the incident in which he said his colleagues went "berserk".

Veteran Weoley councillor Ray Holtom says he was forced to flee to a Birmingham Council toilet and is taking legal advice and making an official complaint about the event.

A Labour Party spokesman confirmed that an investigation was being carried out by the city's standards committee.

The row broke out when Coun Holtom spoke out in the council meeting against the proposed sale to a trust of 88,000 Birmingham council houses and warned his colleagues it would trigger an electoral backlash that would cost them their seats.

He said: "I eventually had to flee into the men's toilet to stop one female Labour councillor having a go at me.

"The fact that I am 72 years old and just recovering from diabetes didn't seem to matter. I had to hide away until it had all died down."
