Vintage record collection binned

Jun 18 2003

Andrew Dixon cherished the vinyl record collection, worth an estimated £12,000, he had compiled over more than two decades.

Since winning his first record at a funfair when he was seven, he had scoured music fairs and second hand shops for vintage recordings. Among the 1,000-plus albums and singles were Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody on royal blue vinyl and a rare version of the Sex Pistols' God Save The Queen, both of which are worth more than £800.

Unfortunately, he has now been left with the sound of silence after the collection disappeared having - according to Mr Dixon - been mistakenly taken away by council officials who thought it was bags of rubbish.

The 31-year-old security guard kept the records, along with some gym equipment, in a private lock-up store room at his block of flats in Warndon, Worcester.

Worcester City Council workers told him they thought the store room was connected to a neighbouring flat which they were renovating.

Alan Workman, the council's building service manager, said Mr Dixon's claim was being investigated and the police had been informed.
