Fan fails to steal Dylan picture

Aug 2 2003

By Alison Dayani, Evening Mail

A Bob Dylan fanatic tried to steal a historic picture of the star’s band performing at Woodstock from under the noses of security guards at a city exhibition.

The music-loving crook smashed the photograph’s frame but was unable to tear the picture from the wall at the former Grand Hotel in Colmore Row.

He then fled the scene before patrolling security guards returned to check on the pictures.

The photo was a digital reprint of the rock star’s famous appearance with The Band at the Woodstock festival in 1969.

“If you think how rare these pictures are, it’s not surprising that someone tried to steal one of them,” said exhibition organiser Rhonda Wilson.

“There is a lot of passion surrounding Dylan and The Band. This was a digital reprint of the original and not worth a lot money-wise, but it’s priceless to a fan.” Rhonda added: “Luckily the picture was screwed on to the wall and the thief gave up and fled. This made us realise how far people will go to get a part of Dylan.”

She said security had now been stepped up since the incident at 3pm last Sunday.

Fans have been flocking to the show throughout the week to see rare pictures taken by family friend and photographer Elliott Landy.

They include Dylan relaxing in private with wife Sarah and his three children, with band members on the road and the famous scene of the singer in front of the Nashville skyline.

The exhibition continues until 6pm tomorrow night. Visitors should use the Barwick Street entrance to the hotel.
