Beyonce crazy to let it fall flat

Nov 14 2003

Andy Coleman

A spectacular start, a fantastic finale - but a mediocre middle.

Beyonce

Beyonce Knowles' much anticipated solo show didn't quite live up to expectations, despite a no expenses spared production that featured ten dancers, a full band, a DJ and five costume changes.

The 22-year-old's entrance was certainly eye-catching. She was lowered from the rafters, upside down, into the arms of four beefy blokes who helped her on to a sofa as she sang current hit Baby Boy.

And, 90 minutes later, the encore of her foot-stomping chart-topper Crazy In Love had the crowd going wild as they sang and danced along before Beyonce was hauled back towards the ceiling and the house lights came up.

It was a rare moment of excitement. Earlier the show had looked liked igniting when the singer introduced songs by her group Destiny's Child, only to discard them in 30 second chunks as part of a medley.

So crowd pleasers like Survivor, Independent Woman and Bootylicious were over before most of the audience could rise to their feet.

More time was devoted to covers of Michael Jackson tunes from Off The Wall and introducing the band members than to the hits we really wanted to hear.

Crazy? We thought so.
