Millions of TV viewers are expected to tune in to see singing sensation Mark Rhodes, from the Darlaston area of the town, up against Glaswegian Michelle McManus in the battle for this year's crown.

And regulars at the Nag's Head pub, in The Green, Darlaston, where the 22-year-old made his live debut just last summer, will be cheering on their hero.

Licensee Julie Cox said the atmosphere in the pub had been "electric" every week and the excitement levels were set to reach fever pitch this weekend.

She said: "We have got banners and posters everywhere and the place has been chaotic over the last few weeks.

"But there has been an amazing atmosphere and we were packed out for last week's semi-final - it felt just the way it does on New Year's Eve!

"In a way, I'm dreading the final because the tension has been mounting and we even had slight doubts when the judges kept knocking him last week.

"But I do think he'll win now because he is such a talented singer and I'll be bringing in a few extra bottles of champagne."

Julie added: "Everyone loved him when he performed here a few months ago and he packed the place out before he was on Pop Idol."

Win or lose, Julie said Mark could count on support from the people of Darlaston, who have taken him to their hearts.

She said: "People in Darlaston are very loyal and we are very proud of him because it has given the town a boost and put us on the map.
