'I 'died' twice' - Ozzy

Jan 5 2004

By Staff Reporter, Birmingham Post

Rock star Ozzy Osbourne "died" twice after his quad-bike accident, he revealed yesterday.

The accident - which left him in a coma for eight days - has left the Birmingham-born legend with gaps in his memory and possible paralysis if he does not wear his neckbrace as prescribed.

The former Black Sabbath frontman revealed his life was only saved by the quick thinking of his bodyguard Sam Ruston.

The accident happened on December 8 at his 320-acre Buckingham estate. He hit a pothole which was covered in leaves and was catapulted over the handlebars.

He tumbled down a hill and the bike landed on top of him, crushing his chest.

His bodyguard, who was riding behind him, rushed to the aid of his employer and gave him mouth to mouth when he twice stopped breathing.

"If it wasn't for Sam I probably wouldn't be here. He had to bring me back to life twice," Ozzy said. "You are bopping along through life and have your ups and downs, but it is amazing how two or three seconds can totally change your life."

He described his confusion he had felt on gradually coming round from his coma. I thought I must have come off my Harley Davidson in Malibu, not my quad-bike in England.

"I didn't know where I was or how long I'd been there. I would drift in and out of consciousness.

"Other times there would be a white light shining through the darkness, but no f***king angels, no one blowing trumpets and no man in a white beard."

Ozzy described the continuing memory loss he suffered as a nightmare. "You think you are going crazy and seeing people that you haven't. I say to Sharon, "Do you remember going to so and so?' Then she'll say we never went there. I don't know the difference between dreams and reality."

Ozzy horrified doctors by discharging himself from intensive care on Christmas Eve.

"I couldn't stand it any more," he said. "I hated feeling like I was going to the bathroom in the middle of Brent Cross shopping centre.

"I got sick of having nurses, doctors, students and sick people around me all the time. I tried to make everyone laugh - except the ones who died on me.

"The TV was the size of a postage stamp and that annoyed me too. The doctors and nurses did a really great job of repairing me, but I just wanted to get home to my family for Christmas."

Ozzy, who has battled addictions to drink and drugs, said the crash - which has left him with an arm in a sling, a steel plate in his collarbone and having to wear a neckbrace - had finally made him "grow up".
