By Jane Tyler, Evening Mail

Top radio presenter Tushar is fighting for his life today after confronting a gang of burglars in his home.

It is believed the 37-year-old Heart fm DJ was mown down by the gang as they fled the scene after he chased them outside.

The father-of-three was left lying in the roadway outside his home with serious head injuries.

It happened at 4.30am on Monday at his home in Castle Bromwich.

Tushar was today said to be “critical” in hospital. His family are at his bedside.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: “He disturbed burglars breaking into his home and he confronted them. It is believed he chased them out of the house and then it is unclear what happened next.

“But he was found in the road with serious head injuries which we are not sure how he got – but we believe they are the result of a collision with a car.”

Police said two men broke into the house but they did not know how many others were in the gang.

Today, a neighbour told of the shock and horror of residents in the close, which she said was a “friendly, closeknit community”.

“We were woken up by a commotion and looked out and saw Tushar lying in the road with blood everywhere,” she said.

“His wife was on the doorstep screaming and crying – she was in a terrible state.”

Paul Fairburn, managing director of Heart fm, said: “Everyone’s in shock because he’s such a warm, lovely, positive person who’s extremely popular.

“Our thoughts are with his family and we’re all keeping our fingers crossed he’ll pull through.”

Today other stunned neighbours described the DJ and his family as “lovely.” One, who asked not to be named, said: “He is a smashing kid.

“He and his wife have lived here for several years and I know they have got a least a couple of kids.”

Another, who also asked not to be identified added: “They are a lovely family and very popular with everyone.

“What has happened in just horrendous.”

Police said later that two women and six men aged from 22 - 16 had been arrested over the incident. All had been released on bail.

Detectives at Chelmsley Wood appealed for witnesses to contact them on 0845 113 5000.
