Colourful tribute to Tolkien at landmark

A city landmark which inspired JRR Tolkien to write his masterpieces is to be bathed in coloured spotlights as a tribute to the author whose boyhood was spent in Birmingham. Families living around the 1758 Perrott's Folly in Edgbaston have helped to raise £26,000 to fund a lighting project to illuminate the sevenstorey tower. Together with the nearby waterworks tower, the Grade II listed Perrott's Folly is believed to have been the inspiration for the Two Towers in the second instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien lived in Stirling Road as a boy and attended St Philip's Grammar School. The Birmingham South West group has secured funding for the lighting. He said: "I know people criticise the city council for not trumpeting Tolkien, but now they have a second chance to."
