Books for the blind boost

Nov 28 2002

By Staff Reporter, Evening Mail

The choice of books on offer to blind people has been widened thanks to a Midlands-based publisher which has agreed to give away electronic copies of books to the National Library for the Blind.

Brewin Books, based in Studley, Redditch has worked with the library for several years to increase the choice available to blind and partially sighted people.

Currently fewer than five per cent of books published in Britain are available in alternative formats such as Braille, audio or large print.

It's estimated that if all publishers in the UK were to supply digital text of their books, the production of Braille books would be more than doubled.

Alan Brewin, Brewin Books managing director said: "We're delighted that the NLB has expanded this service."
