Friends, Romans.. pole dancers!

May 9 2003

By Justine Hollins, Evening Mail

They may once have been poles apart - but that's all changed for a group of actors and pole dancers in Birmingham.

With a little help from experts at Spearmint Rhino, the stars of Birmingham Crescent Theatre's production of a new musical comedy are about to get a little saucy.

Their new show, The Boys from Syracuse, is based loosely on William Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.

But instead of a traditional Greek dancing scene, theatre-goers will get a taste of pole dancing in a New York set nightclub.

To get up to speed, cast members have been getting expert tuition from teachers at Spearmint Rhino, which has been holding pole dancing classes for almost a year.

A theatre spokesman said: "The production has been updated from ancient Greece to 1930s New York.

"An original Greek dancing scene has been replaced by a nightclub scene which includes pole dancing.

"We decided to incorporate pole dancing because it fits really well with the rhythm of the music.

"It's still a musical comedy but now it's got a much more modern feel to it and it's also a bit sexy." The Rodgers & Hart musical comedy will open at the Crescent on Thursday and runs until May 24. For ticket information ring 0121 643 5858.
