Brum Wheel rolls up in Australia

Dec 22 2006

The Birmingham Wheel at its new home in Australia.

THE Birmingham Wheel is enjoying the sun, sea and sand of Australia after it completed its journey from Broad Street to Broad Beach near Brisbane.

The wheel was previously sited outside the International Convention Centre on Centenary Square until poor ticket sales and an attractive offer by an Australian company to buy the £3.5 million structure, enticed it Down Under.

The wheel made the journey from Birmingham's Golden Mile to the Gold Coast after its final turn on British soil in September.

Last January a deal had been struck between the wheel's owners, World Tourist Attractions, and Birmingham City Council for it to remain in the city until January 2007.

But there were concerns over its 300-tonne weight on the paving of Centenary Square, and whether the £75,000 rent for the prime city centre location was adequate.
