“The next phase of the Metro has been costed in fine detail. If there are other proposals it could delay us for a long time.” A public inquiry into the proposed extension of the Metro through the city centre, from Snow Hill to Five Ways, will get underway in December.

Coun Mike Whitby (Con Harborne), leader of the city’s Conservative group, said Coun Tyrrell’s comments were out of step with many of his colleagues. He added: “There has been a real change of view and more and more people are beginning to take the underground option seriously.”

Coun Whitby is in talks with a construction company about an underground railway in Birmingham. The minimum cost is expected to be £5 billion to £10 billion.
