'Pull down this house of horrors'

Victims, haunted by years of abuse at the hands of paedophile priest Eric Taylor, are demanding their former children's home be demolished. The Father Hudson Society in Coleshill, Warwickshire, has announced plans to sell the St Edward's Home for Boys building, which may be converted into flats. But former residents are pleading for it to be knocked down and have asked for money from the sale be given to the victims of Taylor. * What do you think? We want know - get in touch by email, messageboard or feedback form *Campaign leader for the demolition Donald O'Keefe - not his real name - said: "We would currently prefer the home to be demolished. It is a house of horrors for most of us. "If demolished, it will end a period of history, where children were abused on a daily basis by monks and nuns." Father Hudson's Society director Kevin Caffrey said he also thought the building should be torn down but refused to comment about the possibility of setting aside money for the victims from the sale of the land. He said: "The land is in a conservation area, which is not the same as having a listed building, but it has the same effect. "Because the council see it as a conservation area, they want to apply conservation rules about architectural and heritage value and some residents also want to preserve the building." But Coun Derek Gordon (Cons Coleshill South) said hardly any of the victims had approached him or other councillors about the possible demolition of the building. Fr Taylor was jailed in 1998 after being convicted of abusing children at the home during the 1950s and 1960s. |
