MP opposes seal cull

Apr 13 2004

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant has urged people in the region to oppose a cull of seals on ice floes off the east coast of Canada.

The Conservative Animal Welfare Group has condemned the cull off Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, in which 300,000 animals are expected to be slaughtered.

Mr Fabricant, a member of the Group, said: "This barbaric practice is carried out under the guise of protecting the fish stocks, but is in fact a licensed slaughter of baby and vulnerable seals to provide pelts for the fur trade.

"The method of execution, by hakapik, is brutal and imprecise."

The Tory MP dismissesd claims that the seals die instantly, adding: "In reality, the hunt is savage and has no place in civilised society."

People who are concerned about the cull should write in protest to the Canadian High Commissioner at Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London SW1Y 5BJ, to make their views abundantly clear, the MP continued.
