I want to fight love rival Flatley

May 9 2004

Sunday Mercury

Former boxing champion Joe Egan is getting back in the ring after 12 years - and has challenged Riverdance love rival Michael Flatley to a charity punch-up.

Joe, three times Irish heavyweight champion, was devastated five years ago when he discovered his fiancŽe of nine years, Lisa Murphy, had been having an affair with the Lord of the Dance star.

The champion heavyweight, who runs the Moseley Arms in Digbeth, Birmingham, is set to take on fellow heavyweight Mark Williams in Dublin - but says he is still hankering for a bout with light-footed Flatley.

Joe, 37, who adopted the Lord of the Ring tag as a dig at the Irish dancer, said: "It was a lousy thing to do. The moment he learned Lisa and I were engaged, he should have backed off immediately.

"You don't go around chasing another person's wife or fiancee.

"One day he'll pay dearly for it. Beating Mark Williams won't have the same satisfaction as knocking off Michael Flatley's block."

Joe and Lisa, who lived together in Birmingham, had been engaged for four and a half years and were planning an Irish wedding when Flatley waltzed onto the scene.

"Michael and I have a longstanding score to settle," said Joe last night. "If he has the guts, I'll fight him anywhere and at anytime in a professional environment and give all money to Daniel O'Donnell's Romanian Challenge Appeal charity."

Joe quit his career in boxing after a bad car crash 12 years ago. He will fight Mark Williams at Dublin's Burlington Hotel on May 30. Both boxers will undergo a final medical check-up for the fight.

Michael Flatley was unavailable for comment.
