May 13 2004

By Alison Dayani, Evening Mail

A teenage student at a Birmingham college has died from a rare strain of meningitis.

The 19-year-old from Tyseley, who has not been named, studied at City College's East Birmingham campus in Garretts Green.

He was taken ill during lectures on Thursday and fell into a coma. He lost his fight for life on Tuesday night.

The funeral of the Muslim teenager was believed to have taken place yesterday.

Staff and students at the campus were today mourning his death and have been issued with information on the symptoms of meningitis.

Ranjna Parmar, director of personnel at the college said public health teams investigating the death had informed her that the strain of meningitis involved was not infectious.

"However, the college has issued warnings and given out numbers for NHS Direct in case people feel ill," she added * Anyone concerned over meningitis should contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
