MP opens new homes for trust

May 17 2004

A £10 million housing regeneration scheme aimed at breathing new life into a Birmingham community has been officially opened.

Birmingham Northfield Labour MP Richard Burden launched the revitalised Shenley estate at a special ceremony.

The Bournville Village Trust (BVT) scheme has already seen 54 new houses built, the construction of a new medical centre, the renovation of the existing park and the planting of 20-year old trees, specially imported from Germany.

A parade of shops has been refurbished, CCTV cameras installed, paving and lighting improved, and 12 new bungalows for older people built as part of the development.

The next phase, which will start shortly, will include the building of homes with solar panels which will pre-heat water.

Alan Shrimpton, director of development at Bournville Village Trust, said: "The proposals are a comprehensive approach to redevelopment and include high quality design that relates well to its context."

A specially-commissioned piece of public art - a sundial - was also unveiled on the site by Peter Dixon, chairman of the Housing Corporation.
