Different speed signs on same road

Jun 13 2004

By Paul Malley, Sunday Mercury

Motorists were left scratching their heads after bungling council workers gave the same stretch of Midland road TWO different limits.

Shuttington Road in the Staffordshire village of Amington has had a 30 mph zone in place for as long as locals can remember.

But they were left more than a little confused when, overnight, one of two 30 mph signs, sited opposite each other was replaced by a 40 mph signpost.

When contacted by the Sunday Mercury, council chiefs admitted the sign was erected in error by contractors - and it was immediately taken down.

But the mistake was condemned by campaign group the Association of British Drivers (ABD) who urged any motor-ists wrongly given a speeding ticket along the stretch to contest it.

Driving instructor Steve Sanders, from Tamworth, in Staffordshire, said: "I use this road everyday. It's a 30 mph limit and both signs used to say 30. Then one day I noticed one of them said 40.

"I thought some yobs might have changed the sign but then realised it was genuine. I found it funny at first but really it's not. People will be confused.

"It has been there about four weeks. All the locals know it is a 30 but many motorists could be caught out.

"There are no speed cameras on the road but there are a lot of mobile units around. Anyone mistakenly thinking it is a 40 mph zone could get a ticket."

Fellow motorist Leonard Billingham, from Amington, said: "I have been a driver for the past 62 years and have driven the length and breadth of Great Britain and the continent.

"I have never come across two signs with two different speed limits directly opposite one another like this."

The mistake was also attacked by the ABD. A spokesman said: "It shows even the authorities are confused by what speed limits should be in place. How on earth do they expect motorists to get it right?

"Any motorist given a ticket on this stretch of road could get out of it because of this mistake. Correct signs have to be on both sides of the road."

A Staffordshire County Council spokesman said the 40 mph sign was mistakenly put up by a lighting contractor, ABB Ltd.

"It is unfortunate but the correct sign has now been erected," he said.

"It was just down to human error. The guy had the wrong sign and he never noticed. We hope it hasn't caused motorists any problems."

A spokesman for ABB Ltd said: "The wrong sign was put in place. We replaced it within an hour of being informed of the error."
