OutRage! wants 'anti-gay' gig axed

Sep 2 2004

By Sarah Probert, Birmingham Post

A gay rights campaign group has urged a Birmingham nightclub to cancel a reggae concert following claims the singer incites violence against homosexuals.

Top Jamaican reggae star Sizzla Kalonji is due to appear at the White Pearl Club in Upper Trinity Street, Aston, tomorrow as part of a national tour.

He is among eight artists whose material is being examined by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over claims their lyrics incite violence against homosexuals.

The gay campaign group OutRage! made a complaint to police about the content, who in turn have asked the CPS to consider whether performance or promotion of the material might amount to a criminal offence.

Now the group is lobbying the club to stop the act from going ahead amid fears he could provoke violence against homosexuals in the city.

Peter Tatchell of OutRage! said: "We urge sponsors, promoters and venue owners to cancel Sizzla's concerts on the grounds that he incites the murder of gays and lesbians, and that his performance may lead to public disorder and to homo-phobic hate crimes.

"No one would give a platform to a singer who advocated killing black or Jewish people. A performer who brazenly glorifies and encourages the murder of lesbians and gay men should not be rewarded with concerts and financial success.

"Securing the cancellation of Sizzla's concert is very important. By hitting him in the pocket it will help pressure Sizzla and other anti-gay Jamaican singers to abandon their murderous incitements. Once they start losing money, they will soon drop their violent lyrics.

"Driving homophobia out of Jamaican music will have a huge positive impact on Jamaican culture and attitudes - to the benefit of all lesbian and gay

"In a free society, Sizzla has a right to criticise homosexuality. But he does not have a right to advocate the killing of lesbians and gay men. He has over-stepped the mark."

A reggae concert in London's Victoria Park billed as the biggest in the UK and headlined by Sizzla and another controversial star Vybz Kartel was cancelled last week following a campaign by OutRage!.

The organisation said Sizzla's lyrics advocated " shooting queers" because "they bring Aids and disease upon people".

The group has written to the White Pearl Club urging it to take immediate action to ensure that the invitation for Sizzla to perform at the venue is withdrawn.

Brett Lock, of OutRage! and co-organiser of the Stop Murder Music campaign, said: "No club would host a singer who promoted killing black or Jewish people or attacking religious minorities or the disabled. We ask the White Pearl Club to adopt the same stance towards singers who incite the murder of gays."

His hit tune Pump Up has the line "Shot battybwoy, my big gun boom". Battybwoy is a Jamaican insult, similar to faggot, poof and queer.

No one at the White Pearl Club was available for comment yesterday...SUPL:
