Great rush to snap up FREE book

Sep 23 2004

By Staff Reporter, Evening Mail

Brummies have given a big thumbs-up to the Evening Mail's Great Family Reads.

Scores of people queued up at newsagents across the city to snap up their eagerly-anticipated free copy of Kenneth Grahame's classic The Wind in The Willows.

Every reader who bought a copy of yesterday's paper was given a free hardback book.

The offer proved so popular that SupaCigs newsagent in Birmingham's Pallasades sold out of the first edition of the paper as grandparents, parents and teenagers walked away with a copy of the children's favourite.

Grandmother Doreen Trinder snapped up her free copy of The Wind In The Willows for her 12-year-old granddaughter.

"I bought the paper so my granddaughter Natasha can have the book," said the 68-year-old from Bordesley Green East, Stechford.

"I read The Wind In The Willows when I was a child and I loved it and hopefully she will too.

"Thank you Evening Mail, this is a great idea."

Pregnant teenager Serina Ford is looking forward to building up a collection for her unborn baby boy.
