Hit 'n' run driver's radio confession

Oct 31 2004

Sunday Mercury

A caller to a late-night radio show confessed to mowing down a teenager in his car - shortly after a 16 year-old was left for dead in a Midland hit-and-run.

Last night police released a transcript of the dramatic phone call made to the James Whale programme on Talk-Sport by a Wolverhampton man named Paddy.

And they urged the mystery caller to contact them.

The teenager was mown down by a dark-coloured car as he crossed Compton Road in Wolverhampton at about 10.15pm on Thursday night.

Shortly afterwards, a caller rang James Whale and admitted live on air that he had been involved in a hit-and-run with a teenager after kids threw fireworks at his car.

The man went on to say how he had returned home and 'washed the blood off the front of the car' .

Whale advised the caller to contact police - but he hung up.

Last night the victim, who has not been named, remained in a critical condition in New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton.

The radio host and cops both urged Paddy to get in touch.

James Whale said: "If Paddy or anyone who knows him is listening, please contact the police and help them with their inquiries."

The presenter will this afternoon make another appeal for anyone with information to come forward on his show between noon and 4pm.

Police said several people reported hearing the caller on the James Whale Show in the early hours of Friday morning.

Sergeant Mark Fullwood, from West Midlands Police, said: "A 16 year-old lad has been left critically injured lying in the road.

"Someone must know who the driver was and I would ask them to come forward. All calls will be treated in the strictest of confidence."

Anyone with information should contact Bilston Street police station on 0845 113 5000.
