Bug thug name and shame bid

Nov 16 2004

By Jessica Shepherd, Evening Mail

Transport bosses are to meet senior police in a bid to name a yob banned from the top deck of every West Midlands bus for terrorising passengers.

The 17-year-old, from Edgbaston, admitted assaulting a girl on the top deck of a No 35 bus in June. He has several other convictions for attacks on buses in the region.

Birmingham Youth Court handed him an anti-social behaviour order which forbids him from top decks for two years - but he was not named by the court.

If he breaks the ruling, no one will know because police have so far refused to reveal his identity - despite Home Secretary David Blunkett's calls for ASBO yobs to be identified wherever possible.

Phil Bateman, from Travel West Midlands which runs the No 35 bus route, is anxious for the youngster to be named and shamed. He said: "We have an excellent relationship with the police and are talking with them about the issue."

West Midlands Police have said they may issue a photo of the teenager so that bus drivers can recognise him. The teenager was given a 12-month supervision order for the assault.
