Medic homes tonic

A former Birmingham University halls of residence site has turned into a gold mine for a Midland developer - with city professionals splashing out on £450,000 homes.

Almost half of the £10 million city housing development has been sold six months ahead of completion, including homes priced up to £445,950.

A wide range of homebuyers are joining the queue for luxury four and five-bedroomed houses at the Bournville Park complex off the A38 Bristol Road, it was revealed today.

The development, close to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, has generated a substantial number of inquiries from doctors keen to snap up local homes.

The upmarket property boom counters claims of a stagnant housing market across the West Midlands following reports of recent falls in house prices in the region.

At Bournville Park, developers Crest Nicholson Midlands have already sold a total of 44 properties out of 94 houses - with the midsummer completion date still months away.

The £10 million development comprises a total of 76 four and five-bedroomed homes costing from £344,950 to £445,950, and 18 twobedroomed houses starting at £185,000.

Amanda Benjamin, sales manager for Crest, said the Tamworth company had worked with the Bournville Village Trust to help tailor the design of the houses to the local community.

"The lake and park nearby gives young professionals and families the opportunity to enjoy a taste of village life, while still retaining close links to the city centre."

Development work on the land began in September 2003 after the site was vacated by Birmingham University who had previously used it as a base for undergraduates' halls of residence.
