Macca's letter to fan sells for £700

Jul 27 2005

A hand-written get well note sent to a Shropshire woman by former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, was sold for £700 at auction.

The letter was sent to a 12-year-old girl called Rosemary, who was ill in hospital in the 1964, after the pop legend met her father outside the group's hotel in Paris.

But when the woman, now aged 54 who wishes to remain anonymous, took the note to school to show her friends, an unimpressed teacher tore it up and tossed it into a bin.

The big-hearted star heard how Rosemary, who still lives in Shrewsbury, was being treated for curvature of the spine at Woodlands Hospital, in Birmingham.

However her classmates managed to retrieve the pieces and stick the keepsake back together.

At the time Beatlemania was at its peak, but Sir Paul still found time to write to the unwell fan.

The note read: "Dear Rosemary, I met your uncle outside our hotel in Paris, he asked me if I would write.

"I forgot, however, being a bit soft - and I am now writing this from London, hope you get better soon. Lots of love Paul McCartney xxx."

Last week it went under the hammer at Halls Fine Art in Shrewsbury, where three memorabilia collectors bid furiously for the prized McCartney signature.

The note had a reserve price of £400 to £600, and was sold to an unnamed collector from the north of England.

A spokesman for the auction house said: "What made this lot special was the fact that he took time out to write the letter, and is also quite valuable because of the time it was written."
