Pensioner helpless as car crash wife dies

Sep 26 2005

A Midland pensioner injured in a road crash could only watch helplessly as emergency crews battled in vain to save his elderly wife.

Hilda Powderhill, aged 79, died when the Peugeot 206 car she was driving collided with a white Ford Transit van in Wiltshire.

Mrs Powderhill died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics to save her. Her husband, Terry, aged 81, who was conscious throughout the rescue attempt, suffered three broken ribs, whiplash and bruising. He was being treated yesterday at Salisbury District Hospital where his condition was described as "stable".

The van driver escaped with minor injuries and was released after treatment at the same hospital.

The elderly couple had been driving from their home in Redditch, Worcestershire, to visit their daughter when tragedy struck, said police.

Witnesses claimed the Peugeot pulled out from the A346 road on to the A342 in Ludgershall into the path of the oncoming Ford Transit which collided with its right side, said Pc Tom Wilson, of Wiltshire Police's roads policing department.

"She was killed in the car while she was behind the wheel," he said.
