Terror suspects released without charge

Oct 13 2005

Four of the ten men arrested at the weekend in connection with suspected international terrorism in the UK were released yesterday without charge.

The men were held during a series of raids in Croydon, south London, Wolverhampton and Derby on Saturday.

The four released yesterday had been arrested in Wolverhampton and were being held in the West Midlands. One of the three arrested in Derby had already been released.

Detectives have been given until Saturday to continue questioning the other five. Scotland Yard has already said the investigation is not connected to the London bombings.

Details of the releases came as about 500 campaigners attended a rally at Central Hall in Westminster to voice concern about the Terrorism Bill, published yesterday.

The meeting, called by London Mayor Ken Livingstone, brought together a coalition including members of Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party, trade unions, civil rights campaigners, Church of England clergy and Muslim groups.

Among the speakers was the Bishop of Coventry, Colin Bennetts, who told the rally: "I am deeply concerned that we shouldn't abandon hard-won civil liberties by abandoning the due process of law.

"Anything which smacks of a fearful reaction to those whose aim is to spread fear is simply playing into their hands, and will in the end, I believe, prove to be self-defeating".
