Appeal launched to help Kashmiri villages

Nov 18 2005

An appeal to raise £400,000 for new villages, which will be named after Birmingham, in earthquake-ravaged Kashmir was launched in the city last night.

Members of the West Midlands Pakistani community aim to provide funding to build two new villages, each containing 100 steel-clad houses able to withstand harsh winter conditions in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The villages, to be named Birmingham One and Birmingham Two, will be located close to the city of Bagh - the largest settlement in Pakistancontrolled Kashmir which was badly damaged in last month's earthquake.

Last night's launch was attended by representatives from Birmingham City Council, which is backing the appeal.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the appeal can send cheques payable to the Pakistan Kashmir Earthquake Relief Development Fund to account 0758983, sort code 30-97-76, Lloyds TSB, Bordesley Green branch, Birmingham.

Fund organisers can be contacted at 340 Green Lane, Birmingham, B95 5DR.
