Clock in... and win new car!

Dec 26 2005

By Chris Morley, Industrial Correspondent

LAND Rover workers could be entered to win a car - by turning up for work more often.

Bosses have dreamed up a new scheme to help boost attendance among the company's 8,000-strong Solihull workforce.

If the trigger points on the so-called Motorvate initiative are met, one lucky employee with a 100 per cent record could be plucked from the hat to win a brand new vehicle.

In addition a sizeable cash sum, amounting to about £40,000, and a Land Rover car would be handed over to charities.

The Motorvate scheme was introduced as a result of employees of the Ford-owned 4x4 specialist accepting their latest two-year pay deal by rejecting strike action in a ballot.

Under the scheme rules, the attendance record of the whole factory's workforce would be monitored.

When the figures improved by 0.25 per cent quarter on quarter, all those who had missed no days' work would be entered for the draw with the winner receiving a Ford.

Land Rover would then put in £5 per head to a community fund and one of the vehicles produced at the Lode Lane plant donated to charity.

Spokesman Mark Foster said a community committee, made up of managers and unions, would decide where the donations went.

He said: "It is beneficial to the community as much as one individual and we are keen to see it work."

But he stressed that the chance for an employee to win a car depended not just on their own attendance but on that of the whole plant.

Go-ahead for the two-year pay deal will boost pay shopfloor pay packets by more than £900 each over 12 months and the inflation rate, plus 0.25 per cent in the following year.

The pay award will be backdated to November 1 with the extra cash being paid for weekly staff in mid-February and monthly staff in March.
