Midlands mementoes of Beatles for sale

May 25 2006

Signed Beatles memorabilia including autographs obtained after a Midlands gig will be auctioned today at Christie's in London.

The collection includes a page from a Birmingham fan's autograph book, worth £800, which features the signatures of Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

The stars' signatures were obtained at the group's 1963 gig in Birmingham, just weeks before they became famous.

After the band's performance at the Ritz Ballroom in York Road, King's Heath, on February 15 that year, McCartney and Harrison wrote a personal message to one of their fans.

The message said, "To Janet, love from the Beatles," and featured their signatures below followed by three kisses next to each name.

They were originally due to perform at The Ritz Ballroom on January 11, 1963 after their evening show at the Plaza Ballroom in Old Hill.
