Region to get digital cinema

THE first of eight digital projectors will be installed in West Midlands cinemas by late summer, it was announced today.
Digital copies can be duplicated much cheaper than the traditional 35mm format, enabling distributors to increase the number of 'prints' available nationwide.
The £12 million scheme, funded by the National Lottery through the UK Film Council, will eventually see 240 digital screens in 210 cinemas across the UK.
In return for the new technology, cinemas will show more specialised, non-blockbuster films, such as lower budget British films like A Cock and Bull Story, the critically acclaimed Good Night, And Good Luck and classics including Brief Encounter.
There will be two digital projectors each for Cineworld Birmingham Broad Street and Vue Birmingham Star City as well as further screens at Cineworld Solihull, Cineworld Wolverhampton, Light House Wolverhampton and Showcase Walsall.
But, as the Mail revealed in January, the MAC arts cinema in Cannon Hill Park has been overlooked despite recently posting a 16 per cent rise in attendances.
Film Minister Shaun Woodward said: "This will be good news for film buffs and for the UK film industry."
