Staunch campaigners who have led a two-year battle against the expansion of Birmingham airport were today launching an eleventh hour attempt to scupper plans for a second runway.
Protesters have started hand delivering thousands of leaflets to families living in the shadow of the airport urging them to bombard Transport Secretary Alistair Darling with the anti-runway message.
He is expected to make an announcement on the future of aviation in the Midlands in a statement to the Commons later this month.
Campaigners argue that a second runway, one of several options being put forward by the Government, will ruin their quality of life.
Coun Bob Sleigh (Cons, Bickenhill) said today: "This is one last push and we are desperate for as many people as possible to write one final letter.
