Alstom workers' redundancy 'yes'

Feb 9 2004

Union leaders vowed today to fight on after Alstom workers voted to accept redundancy terms as the firm's 150-year-old Birmingham plant is wound down.

Workers were told on Friday that the French-owned company was moving into detailed consultations over up to 900 job losses as production is phased out at the Washwood Heath site.

Blue collar employee representatives had already entered into negotiations over redundancies and workers individually balloted over the last fortnight.

The terms, which could give a worker with 15 years service up to £25,000, was backed by 285 Amicus union members while only 41 rejected the deal. A further 116 did not vote.

Union leaders have always accepted that there would be job cuts at the former Metro-Cammell train building yards, but have campaigned far and wide to keep the manufacturing facility open.

They believed that if the site remained intact, it could tick over until more rolling stock orders came in from the UK rail industry.

Tom Keogh, Amicus regional organiser, said today: "As far as we are concerned the lads and lasses have accepted the company's redundancy package, but our campaign still continues.

"The business case is there and even at this stage, some sort of intervention from the Government or Strategic Rail Authority could still protect train building at the plant."
