Anger as ton-up teen is freed

Mar 5 2004

Road safety campaigners have condemned the quashing of a three-month jail term given to a Dudley teenager who was caught driving at nearly 80mph above the speed limit.

Motocross enthusiast James Green won an appeal against the custodial sentence imposed on him by Halesowen magistrates after police recorded him driving at 116mph along a residential road with a 40mph limit.

The 18-year-old, of Hockley Lane, Netherton, Dudley, was given a 12-month rehabilitation order and instructed to complete 100 hours community service by a judge sitting at Wolverhampton Crown Court today after appealing against his original sentence.

His 18-month driving ban remained in place.

Green, who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving after he was caught in a police speed trap in Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, Dudley, last year, walked free from court having served eight days of his sentence.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said: "We feel this is the wrong message to send out.

"This was a particularly appalling piece of driving and could easily have led to the deaths of innocent people.

"In our view, the courts need to demonstrate that life threatening and irresponsible behaviour on our roads will be dealt with as seriously as possible."
