Steve Daley, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder, was fined £400 by a court yesterday after he was caught drink driving for a third time.
The 50-year-old ex-footballer, now a sales representative with a West Midlands brewery, was also banned from the roads for 28 months.
Wolverhampton Magistrates were told Daley gave police an alcohol reading of 103 microgrammes after being stopped in a spot check. The legal limit is 80.
Daley, of Histons Drive, Codsall, near Wolverhampton, admitted driving with excess alcohol.
He agreed in court to take part in a drink drive rehabilitation course which could reduce his driving ban by seven months.
Kenneth Leedham, defending, said Daley, who continues to do charity work in the football world, had been out with friends and was on his way home when he was stopped.
After the case Daley said: "It's horrible. It causes all sorts of problems. It's certainly about time I did something about it."
Daley, who was one of the first million pound footballer when Wolves sold him to Manchester City in 1979, was also fined and disqualified by magistrates for drink driving in 1986 and 1991.
