Mar 3 2004

By Steve Johnson, Evening Mail

Third man has been arrested in connection with the hit and run killing of a teaching assistant outside the school where he worked.

The 19-year-old was bailed without charge pending further inquiries by detectives investigating the death of David Evans outside Shireland College in Waterloo Road, Smethwick, on January 20.

A 39-year-old man from Cradley Heath and a 26-year-old man from Smethwick were arrested three days after the incident but they were also released on bail without being charged.

Mr Evans, of Willow Avenue, Edgbaston, Birmingham, died on January 20 when he was mown down on a zebra crossing outside Shireland Language College and Sixth Form Centre in Waterloo Road, Smeth-wick, where he worked as a work experience programme co-ordinator.

Mr Evans was struck by a stolen car which was found burned-out shortly afterwards. Firefighters were called to deal with the fire but before police could get to the car to investigate it was towed away.

Police believe it has since been shredded to destroy vital clues.
