Third school ban for boy, 5

Mar 4 2004

By Tony Collins, Evening Mail

A boy aged just five has been banned from lessons at his city primary school for the third time in a month.

Malano Linton is serving a three day temporary exclusion from St James’ CE Primary in Sandwell Road, Handsworth, for “violent conduct”.

The youngster, from Booth Street, Handsworth, is said to have struck a female dinner supervisor during a lunch break at the school.

The extended classroom ban was imposed on Malano after two previous incidents in the last few weeks, each of which resulted in one day exclusions.

His mother, Angela Linton, was meeting staff at St James’ CE primary this afternoon in a bid to resolve the boy’s future education.

She said: “He’s supposed to have hit a supervisor, but I don’t believe a five-year-old child can do this.

“They didn’t say what caused it. Someone must have really wound him up, but I still don’t believe he would have done that.

“He has been excluded for a day on two occasions a couple of weeks back for misbehaviour but, to be honest, I can’t understand it all.”

Miss Linton, who also has a 15-month-old son Mario, added: “He’s a very bright child. If they exclude him permanently, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

A spokesman for St James’ said Malano, whose ban started yesterday, was excluded “ following a number of incidents of violent conduct towards staff and pupils”.

He said: “The head is meeting this afternoon to discuss a behaviour plan for the pupil. We are keen to keep him in school if the parents agree to the revised plan.”
