A SANDWELL councillor under investigation for allegedly trying to sell his girlfriend for sex faces an anxious wait to discover if he is to be prosecuted.
Alan Burkitt was arrested at his flat in Beaconview Road, Charlemont Farm, West Bromwich, in March and held in custody for 24 hours as police quizzed him over claims he acted as a pimp.
He was freed without charge but has had to return to West Bromwich police station three times to answer bail pending inquiries.
Coun Burkitt, aged 47, who was kicked out of the Tory party following his arrest, represents the Charlemont with Grove Vale ward on Sandwell Council and now plans to stand as an independent when he comes up for reelection in 2008.
He answered his bail for the third time on Tuesday, when he was expecting to find out whether he was to be formally charged or have his file closed.
But papers on the case are still with the Crown Prosecution Service and no decisions have yet been made.
Det Insp Mark Ryder, of Sandwell North CID at West Bromwich, said Coun Burkitt had now been bailed to July 31.
"We hoped we would have a decision on this case by now but we are still waiting on the CPS. Hopefully by the end of July, when Coun Burkitt answers his bail again, we will be in a position to say whether he is going to be charged with anything or not," he said.
Coun Burkitt has now set himself up as an Independent councillor, after being rejected by the British National Party.
His arrest led to Conservative councillor Anne Hughes calling on the Standards Board of England to investigate. The board has the power to remove him from public office.
But Coun Burkitt, formerly the deputy leader of the Tory party on Sandwell Council, has vowed to clear his name.
The former housing officer started off on Sandwell Council in 1996 as a Liberal Democrat but defected to the Tories in 1999.
