First class Mail effort!

Jun 15 2004

By Staff Reporter, Evening Mail

As many customers reeled from news of the axe, others were today celebrating the outcome of the Evening Mail's community-led campaign.

People leaving Hillwood Road post office hailed Post Office Ltd’s decision to keep it open as “a victory for common sense”.

Christine Schneider, aged 31, of Bartley Green, uses it three times a week, and was collecting pensions for her parents Patricia and Peter Schneider.

“My mum and dad are both 70 and my mum in particular struggles to get about, so this post office is really useful for them,” said Christine, a teacher at Turves Green School.

“It’s great news that it is going to stay open.”

Joan Cawley, aged 50, of Middleton Hall Road, in Cotteridge, regularly uses the post office.

“It’s good news that they are keeping this post office open and it’s great that the Evening Mail launched a campaign.

“It’s about time somebody did something to keep post offices open because they are needed by elderly people.”

Rhonda Urbano, aged 31, and her mum Valerie Yates, aged 48, of Fourlands Road, use the post office for paying fuel bills and catalogue orders.

Rhonda said: “It always seems busy.”

Valerie said: “It’s a shame they won’t keep all the post offices open.

“Customers will be attracted by the post office to use the shops in this area.”
