Claire Short is calling upon Brummies to show their generosity and back our Winning the Peace appeal in aid of Iraqi children.
The campaign is being run in conjunction with UNICEF and the citys faith leaders. It hopes to raise thousands of pounds for urgent medical and educational aid.
The former cabinet minister was speaking at a fundraising dinner for Iraq held by Digbeth based charity Islamic Relief.
She said: I would absolutely back the campaign and UNICEF is a fine organisation. There are serious problems of diarrhoea and malnourished children and a lot of them have been trauma-tised by war.
Many have lost parents and have been injured and we must support them so they can look forward with hope.
The Birmingham Lady-wood MP was one of the most vocal opponents of the war and resigned from the cabinet in the aftermath of the conflict after weeks of tension with Tony Blair.
She said: We have all seen the suffering of war and whatever view on the war people took, war is always evil and causes suffering to innocent people.
Birmingham did itself proud in the Kosovo crisis. People from all over the city mobilised and I would like to think we are going to do the same for the people of Iraq.
It is really important for people from all communities to provide support and send a signal to the people of Iraq that we care about them and that we are behind them.
The appeal was launched last Thursday at Birmingham Childrens Hospital and was the brainchild of the citys faith leaders.
It will last for four weeks and has the full backing of the Evening Mail. The money raised will go direct to UNICEF.
