Stab victim in fight for life

May 2 2005

By Mail Reporter

A mother of three was today fighting for her life in hospital after a frenzied stabbing attack at her home.

Debbie Barnett was attacked at her home in Elliotts Lane, Codsall, Staffordshire, around 10pm on Saturday.

She was taken by ambulance to New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton, and was today said to be in intensive care.

Her children - a teenage girl and a younger girl and boy - were believed to have been in the house at the time. They are being cared for by relatives and friends.

Police sealed off Elliotts Lane to traffic following the incident and taped off the front and back garden of the house, which has been up for sale for about two months.

Neighbours, who did not wish to be named, today spoke of their shock.

One man said: "I heard a commotion, looked out-side and there was a child crying 'mummy, mummy'. The next thing I knew there were police everywhere."

Another man said: "We heard screams but did not realise what had happened until later."

A woman said: " I heard a man say over a mobile phone 'she has been stabbed several times'. It is awful."

The neighbours said Mrs Barnett and her family had lived at the property for just over two years.

A spokesman for Staffordshire police said: "We are investigating an incident in Elliotts Lane where a woman has received stab wounds.

"A 47-year-old male has been detained and is assisting police with the inquiry."
