Sun smiles on fun in park

May 30 2005

By Poppy Brady

A city park became a giant playground as thousands of people basked in the sun and enjoyed the Lord Mayor's Show.

Hot on the heels of Walkathon 2005, Cannon Hill Park filled with revellers eager to enjoy the vast array of free entertainment on offer.

And the new Lord Mayor Coun John Hood made sure he joined in the fun with a ride on one of the funfair slides and a trip in an armoured vehicle as part of an Army display.

Outgoing Lord Mayor Coun Mike Nangle, who will be deputy this year, was also at the show, which is the final fundraising event for his charities - Cancer Research UK, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Fireside Day Centre.

The new Lord Mayor's charities will be the Royal National Institute for the Blind, Acorn Children's Hospice, the Women's Campaign and the Leonard Cheshire Trust. The two-day show, backed by New BRMB, which continues until 6pm today, included live music, miniature steam rides, dog and falconry displays, a giant arts and crafts tent and majorette dance exhibitions.

And for those who found it all too much, there was even a yoga tent to soothe tattered nerves.

Ron Jones, who chairs the Lord Mayor's Show committee, said: "I've been involved with the last 15 shows and they just seem to get better.

"There is a great family atmosphere."

Today's highlights were due to include the UB40 tribute band Rat in the Kitchen, ABBA UK, Kevin Plant as Elvis Presley and a performance by Carol Decker of T'Pau.
