Dogs to sniff out city date rapists

Sep 17 2004

By Mark Cowan, Evening Mail

Police sniffer dogs could be trained to detect date-rape drugs being smuggled into Birmingham pubs and clubs.

Dog squad officers are looking at using the animals' super-sensitive noses to hunt for drugs including GHB and Rohypnol.

They could be used to patrol queues outside major bars and clubs in Birmingham on the prowl for sex predators carrying drugs to spike women's drinks.

The idea has just been introduced by police in Surrey and central Scotland and although it is too soon to gauge its effectiveness, West Midlands Police are now looking at the scheme.

Police chiefs see date rape as a problem but, until now, there has been no hard evidence about what danger it poses to city women.

The plan is in its early stages at the moment.
