A midnight spot check on cars travelling on the M6 Toll motorway showed drivers speeding at an average of 88 mph - with more than half of all cars clocked at over 90 mph.
One in seven were travelling at more than 100 mph as drivers used it as a racetrack, according to a leading motoring magazine.
The fastest recorded by Auto Express using their own speed camera was a frightening 117 mph.
The magazine said similar checks on a nearby section of the normal M6 showed an average speed of just 75 mph with only 23 per cent of cars exceeding 80 mph.
In its latest edition, out on Wednesday, it claims that, when posing as potential customers wanting to buy a sporty car, dealers in the area regularly suggested the Toll Road for a high speed test run.
"The M6 Toll is fast," one said. "I've been down it a number of times and haven't seen any police yet. The tarmac is good and you'd be OK going more than 100mph."
The magazine claims to have spoken to several drivers at the Toll's RoadChef service station, near Cannock, Staffs, who claimed they regularly went well over the speed limit with several doing more than 100 mph.
The road is also a hot topic of conversation on many motoring enthusiasts' websites with drivers suggesting it's the one place to head for if you want a fast drive.
The M6 Toll operator Midlands Expressway, however, has confirmed the 70 mph speed limit and said the road was "policed by both marked and unmarked patrol cars of the Central Motorway Police Group".
A police spokesman said: "Speed enforcement on the M6 Toll is carried out by our officers to the same standard as the rest of the motorways in our jurisdiction. "
