Amy cops arrest third man

Jan 16 2005

Sunday Mercury

Police hunting the killer of pregnant schoolgirl Amy Williams were last night quizzing a third suspect.

The 42-year-old man was detained by West Mercia Police yesterday morning at an undisclosed location.

Detectives said the man was a new suspect and had been arrested on suspicion of the murder of the teenager.

It is almost three weeks since the 14-year-old's naked and strangled body was found in the grounds of St Michael's Church in the Madeley area of Telford in Shropshire.

The latest development came just hours after officers released CCTV images of a man they wanted to trace in connection with the inquiry.

The man, who appears to be wearing a dark coat, possibly with a hood, and dark trousers, was walking in the centre of Sutton Hill, at 10.25pm on Boxing Day night.

Police also revealed they have new CCTV images showing Amy as she walked across the Stonedale car park, near her home in Sutton Hill, at 10.26pm on Boxing Day - three minutes later than previous footage.

Police believe Amy must have 'crossed paths' with the unidentified man.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Morgan said the images represented a 'significant' line of inquiry in the investigation.

Amy's step-dad, Mark Chatell, 32, added: "Everyone just wants this person caught. We're all getting on with things as you have to but when this monster's still out there it's very hard.

"Amy's mum Jane is being strong but she knows she's got the funeral coming up in a couple of weeks and that's on her mind all the time."

Earlier last week, Jane Chattel, 39, said her daughter's killer must have been 'sick' and she urged the public to do everything possible to help police.

"Amy was really looking forward to having the baby. We've still got all the baby clothes upstairs. My other daughter, Kelly, who's 18, is eight months pregnant," the devastated mum said.

She confirmed that the 28-year-old man arrested and released without charge last week was Dominic Palmer, of Southfields, Sutton Hill.

She said: "Dominic is a friend of everyone round here and a friend of mine. Police are interviewing everyone that knows me and Amy."

Mr Palmer was one of two Telford men questioned by detectives about the death before being freed without charge.

The other, Tim Jones, 27, was quizzed for four days before being released. The unemployed store worker exclusively admitted to the Sunday Mercury he was once charged with indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl but was cleared at trial.

Police also want to trace two cars seen near the church hours before Amy's body was found.

Meanwhile, detectives have confirmed they have been in discussions with BBC's Crime-watch programme, with a view to showing Amy's case.
