Jim Davidson nick-nicked my woman

Jan 30 2005

By Jasbir Authi, Sunday Mercury

COMEDIAN Jim Davidson stormed off stage after a heckler accused him of stealing his girlfriend.

Davidson had yet to start his show at a Midland theatre when Chris Cain, 53, confronted him about the alleged fling, which he said took place 15 years ago.

The 50 year-old funnyman immediately walked off and when the heckling got worse he told the audience from behind the curtain: "This isn't going to work, is it folks?"

The walkout at Leamington's Royal Spa Centre sparked a near-riot after the audience was left without any explanation for half an hour and no action was taken against the heckler.

But last night an unrepentent Mr Cain said: "He pinched my woman. Why shouldn't I have a go?"

Mr Cain, of Milverton, Leamington, was one of a group of pub locals taken to the show by landlord Kevin Murphy of Murphy's bar on Regent Street.

Speaking at the pub last night, jobless Mr Cain told the Sunday Mercury: "Davidson makes a living out of teasing people, so why can't he take the joke when it's on him?

"All I did was ask him about my bird and he just walked off the stage like a child having a tantrum.

"Davidson did a gig in Southport 15 years ago and literally went off with my girl. She'd gone to see him with her mother.

"Next thing I knew, she was missing for three months. She didn't call me and her mother told me that she'd met this new man called Jim Davidson. And that was it for us.

"She was a really pretty girl with a great figure. She wasn't the love of my life but that's not the point.

"I met her again about five years later but didn't like to ask her about Davidson."

Mr Cain said he had not gone to the Friday night performance deliberately to wind up the comic.

"I didn't know he was playing at the Spa Centre," he said. "I wouldn't have bought a ticket but the landlord at Murphy's bought 25 tickets for regulars so it would have been rude not to go.

"When I saw Jim I shouted: 'Hey, what have you done with my girlfriend?'

"I expected him to have a go at me, saying 'Your bird was great in bed'. I would have loved that - but he didn't. "When Davidson went off with my girlfriend, my mates teased me about it

for ages. Why shouldn't I have asked him about it? But I'm sorry for the 800 people who had their night-out cut short."

Mr Cain would not name his former girlfriend.

A source close to the comedian said he had walked off because of racist abuse directed at his Armenian support act.

"Jim's obviously very adept at putting down hecklers but he walked off without saying anything because someone had shouted something racist at his support act, like 'Go back to your own country.'

"One man did shout something about

Jim running off with his girlfriend but it was apparently years ago. He didn't recognise the man at all."

But Rob Larkin, who was with Mr Cain's group, denied that anyone had been racist.

"The support act was very good," he said. "He was making jokes about being an asylum-seeker and somebody said 'What are you doing here then?'

"No-one in the audience said anything racist."

A spokesman for Jim Davidson said: "There was an apparently orchestrated campaign of disruption of the event and Jim was advised by security to leave the building.

"The disruption had already occurred during Jim's support act and Jim didn't take the decision to leave the theatre lightly.

"Clearly with Jim's long touring career, he's more than capable of dealing with lone hecklers but this was much more than that."

Warwick District Council, which parts funds the centre, said an inquiry was underway and added that full refunds would be given to the audience.
