Jailed for biting man's nose off

Apr 3 2004

A former Staffordshire pub licensee who bit off the end of a drinker's nose because he did not like his Celtic FC shirt has been jailed for nine months.

Philip Childs (38), who used to run the Station Inn at Horsefair, Rugeley, was convicted at Stafford Crown Court in February of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Carl Wilson who was out for a Sunday afternoon drink with his wife and two children when he was attacked.

Childs. of Freemantle Drive, Wimblebury, Cannock, was cleared of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

The jury was told the end of Mr Wilson’s nose was found under a hedge. He was taken to hospital but an operation by surgeons to replace it failed. He was now undergoing outpatient treatment for reconstructive surgery.

Sentencing Childs, the judge Recorder Main Thompson said it was an “unprovoked, savage and ferocious attack”.

“I consider this to be an absolute tragedy,” he said.
