Scissor Sisters scoop gig of the year

Dec 23 2004

The Scissor Sisters have scooped the Gig of the Year award for their performance at this year's V Festival.

The Scissor Sisters

The New York disco dollies were voted top act for their camp stage show.

Summer's open-air gigs by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in London's Hyde Park came second, followed by performances from Keane, Maroon 5 and Snow Patrol.

Most of the acts, voted for by Virgin Radio listeners, were newcomers to the music scene.

But veteran band The Who made the top 10 for their gig at the Royal Albert Hall in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend treated the audience to classics including My Generation and The Kids Are Alright.

Oxfam's Make Trade Fair gig, featuring REM, Coldplay's Chris Martin and Razorlight on the bill, earned a mention, as did Franz Ferdinand playing their home city of Glasgow.

David Bowie headlining the Isle of Wight festival was also voted a highlight.

Nearly 4,000 listeners voted in the annual survey.

Virgin Radio breakfast DJ Pete Mitchell said: "This year has seen an amazing array of talent come through into the mainstream.

"The Scissor Sisters are one of the most original, eccentric bands to come through and it's no surprise the British public are lapping up their performances."
