Girl, 11, killed in blaze

Mar 1 2004

An 11-year-old girl suffered severe burns after her clothes went up in flames when she stood too close to an open fire at her Staffordshire home.

The girl's father was also injured as he beat out the flames which engulfed her legs with his bare hands.

The pair were both taken to hospital following the blaze which spread through their living room at the property in Denstone, near Rocester.

Fire crews were called to the house in Hawthorn Close at around 5.45pm yesterday said a fire guard to protect the hearth had not been used.

Station Officer Gary Goodwin, of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "On arrival at the scene firefighters discovered that an 11-year-old girl had been standing too close to an open fire which subsequently ignited her clothing.

"The flames caused severe burns to the back of her legs before spreading to living room furniture.

"The young lady's father was also burned by beating out the flames with his bare hands.

Mr Goodwin added: "This fire was entirely avoidable as the fireguard was available in the living room but not used."
