The parents of a pregnant Midland teacher killed in a car crash spoke of their anguish at the prospect of attending the inquest into their daughter's death today. Bill Peaty and his wife Marjorie, said they were dreading the inquiry into how 26-year-old Deborah was killed on her way home from work when her car collided with a BMW driven by a Sri Lankan asylum seeker. Earlier this week the couple told The Post of their disgust that the man accused of causing the crash, Ratnam Yogan, had been allowed to flee the country while on bail. Deborah died in a pile-up on the A5 near Pottersbury, Northamptonshire, in October. The teacher, who had moved to Daventry, Northants, was 30 weeks pregnant and her daughter Charlotte Louise was later delivered by emergency Caesarean but was pronounced dead shortly after. Yogan (29) failed to appear in court last week after he was bailed at a hearing in January which did not confiscate his passport. A second man in the car, Pushparajah Sinnappayal, has also skipped bail. Mr and Mrs Peaty and Deborah's partner, Jason Leach, plan to attend the inquest in Milton Keynes. "We are dreading it, but we have got to go," said Mr Peaty. "There are some things that we wanted to learn, but the case has been overshadowed by the fact that two defendants have disappeared. Debbie may never get justice, the courts have let us down." Meanwhile, police in Wolverhampton have claimed more uninsured asylum seekers are taking to Britain's roads than ever before. They claim that in one area one in six drivers stopped by roadside patrols are uninsured asylum seekers. Sergeant Gary Dorrington said many of those caught held driving licences in their native countries but failed to convert them to UK licences. A judge who jailed an illegal immigrant after he ran over and killed a boy of nine has called for swipe cards to be introduced by insurance companies that would have to be shown before drivers could fill their cars with petrol. Judge Anthony Thorpe was last week forced to reduce the sentence he had given to Algerian Kamel Kadri. |
